As a proud former member of the San Francisco South End Rowing club (known for naked birthday swims, swimmers who shun wetsuits and swimmers who tackle the most craziest of swim challenges), I can tell you swimming without a wetsuit for an Alcatraz event is entirely doable with the proper preparations in mental and physical training. However, for athletes taking on any of the Alcatraz triathlons or aquathons including the Escape from Alcatraz, the Ultimate Escape from Alcatraz, the San Francisco Alcatraz and the Alcatraz Challenge, I do not recommend going ‘naked’ (sans wetsuit) even if you are a truly seasoned cold water swimmer.

No matter the distance you ride, you should be comfortable on your bike. If you have neck, back, or knee pain, saddle sores, numbness in the hands, feet or anywhere else, your bicycle probably doesn't fit you properly. A good bike fit can address these issues and also improve your pedaling efficiency, aerodynamics and actually make you faster. Your body is most likely asymmetric (one leg or arm may be slightly longer or shorter than the other). The slightest imbalance can lead to pain. Most triathletes have a season laid out in one of two ways; a full season of multisport and single sport events of varying ‘importance’ or a schedule that include one main race event for their triathlons season / year. If you are an athlete more like the latter, I encourage you to consider integrating some ‘training’ or ‘practice’ events to your schedule. Some athletes might refer to these types of events as “B” or “C” priority where their key event is an “A”.
